Continuous Emission Monitoring System

Caltex Lytton refinery in Australia

Caltex has recently approached AquaGas to perform a system expertise at their Lytton refining facilities near Brisbane.

The difficulties experienced by Caltex with their CEMS (Continuous Emission Monitoring System) had been related to the existing sampling method and resulted in a high maintenance level and unreliable monitoring operations.

Thanks to the customer feedback and following a couple of site visits, AquaGas has identified several ways to optimise the existing CEMS (Continuous Emission Monitoring System) sampling method. In order to secure the data availability and keep the maintenance requirements to their minimum, AquaGas Pty Ltd has supplied, integrated and installed a set of heated gas sampling probes:

  • ASP300

At the boiler facilities, the ASP300 fitted with automatic blowback, calibration port in accordance with CEMS standards and a continuous soot removal system.

  • ASP400

For the Thermal Oxidiser, the ASP400 equipped with automatic blowback, calibration port in accordance with CEMS standards and designed to handle high dust load as well as elevated process gas temperatures.

Both the ASP300 and ASP400 provide the plant operator with application specific features and innovative design resulting in a series of advantages:

  • Programmable back-flush sequences,
  • Calibration as per CEMS code,
  • Extended filtration surface,
  • Flue gas temperature measurement
  • Insitu filters – The ASP’s allows the inspection of the Insitu or “top filter” without the need for dismounting the probe (No fitters required for inspection or maintenance).

Mine Water Online Analysers

The use of water in mining has the potential to affect the quality of surrounding surface water and groundwater. In response to environmental concerns and government regulations, the mining industry worldwide increasingly monitors water discharged from mine sites, and has implemented a number of management strategies to prevent water pollution. Water issues and management vary from site to site and must be addressed locally.

How mines use water

Mining operations use water for mineral processing and metal recovery, controlling dust, and meeting the needs of workers on site. The amount of water required by a mine varies depending on its size, the mineral being extracted, and the extraction process used. For instance, metal mines that chemically process ore to concentrate metals such as copper and gold use much more water than non-metal mines such as coal, salt, or gravel mines.

Although a large mining operation may use a considerable amount of water, the minerals industry overall consumes a relatively small quantity of water at national and global levels. Mining accounted for 4% of the water used in Canada in 2005, versus 60% for coal and nuclear electric power generation, 18.5% for manufacturing, 9.5% for municipal water supplies, and 8% for agriculture. Mining accounts for 1% of water used in the U.S., and 2-3% of the total water consumed in Australia.

The rate of water reuse and recycling in mineral processing is often very high at mine sites, especially in areas with arid climates. A number of innovative water conservation practices  are being developed and implemented to reduce water use.

Types of mine water

There are a number of classifications of mine water, which can vary in their quality and potential for contamination:

  • Mine water: refers to any surface or groundwater present at the mine site
  • Mining water: water which has come into contact with any mine workings
  • Mill water: water used to crush and grind ore, may contain dissolved minerals and/or metals
  • Process water: water used in the chemical extraction of metals, commonly contains process chemicals
  • Leachate: water which has trickled through solid mine wastes and may contain dissolved minerals, process chemicals, and/or metals
  • Effluent: Mining, mill, or process water which is being discharged into surface water, often after being treated
  • Mine drainage water: Surface or groundwater which flows or has the potential to flow off the mine site

Typically, all the mine water at metal mines is collected and stored in tailing ponds before being treated and released to surface water if necessary.

OPAL-OIl Pollution Alarm - WQMS

Oil platforms, refineries and Tank farms generate produced water which requires close management. For every country in Oceania, there are regulations setting limits on the amount of hydrocarbons than can be disposed of overboard and a range of different lab techniques that can be used for reporting this amount. The OPAL and PAUTBAC II from SERES IR based analysers can provide continuous measurement of the oil concentrations in the discharge water from oil and gas processing and storage facilities.

Process optimisation

The OPAL and PAUTBAC II from SERES are respectively side stream analyser and oil tank de-watering systems based on IR light scattering. They not only can provide you with extremely accurate monitoring, but also sense for changes in the size of oil droplets and therefore in process conditions. Using the built in IR detector, the OPAL and PAUTBAC II analysers enable early detection of oil traces in all type of water, ensuring fast overview of the process conditions.
As the volume of your discharge water increases, you need a system that will meet your changing demands, work reliably and with minimal operator input required. Having provided hundreds of online monitoring systems worldwide, SERES is the best positioned to assist you along with your water management plan.

Every platform, refineries, industrial process (…) has to recover as much oil as possible, as efficiently as possible. In order to make improvements you need to understand how the current system is working. SERES Environnement manufactures the OPAL (IMO* certified) allowing real-time measurement of oil concentrations at the inlet and outlet of any separator, providing continuous on-line information about the effectiveness of your separators. The OPAL can also trigger a divert valve to route the produced water through a sand filter.

The OPAL is the last generation of detector designed for online and Real-time suspended Hydrocarbons monitoring. It uses Infra-Red scattering to enables early detection of oil in any type of water. Reagent’s free, the OPAL represents the most cost effective solution and matches a large range of application requirements.
