New Workplace Exposure Limits: Why Hospitals and Labs Must Act Now on Sterilant Gas Monitoring
Continuous Monitoring Solutions for Sterilant Gases – Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) Australia
Since 2016, AquaGas has partnered with ChemDAQ to deliver continuous monitoring solutions for sterilant gases in Australia. With the transition from Workplace Exposure Standards (WES) to Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) effective 1 December 2026, hospitals, labs, and sterile processing units must now adopt real-time sterilant gas monitoring solutions to ensure compliance and protect staff safety.

What’s Changing: From WES to WEL in Australia
- Terminology: WES is transitioning to WEL to emphasise strict exposure limits that must not be exceeded.
- Scope: Updated and additional limits now apply to a broader range of airborne contaminants.
- Ethylene Oxide (EtO): Recognised as a non-threshold genotoxic carcinogen.
- Advisory notes: Sensitisation and ototoxicity guidance updated.
WEL will be enforceable from 1 December 2026. Organisations should begin preparing now to ensure compliance.

Why Continuous Monitoring Solutions for Sterilant Gases Are Essential for Healthcare
Even small leaks can pose significant risks. Residual hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) can remain after sterilisation cycles; EtO is a proven carcinogen; and peracetic acid (PAA) can be harmful at less than 1 ppm, often without detectable odour. This is why continuous monitoring solutions for sterilant gases are essential in healthcare and research facilities.
- Real-time ppm: Continuous area monitoring with immediate feedback
- 8-hour & 15-minute TWA: Tracking exposures against occupational limits
- Alarms & Logs: Customisable alerts with data logging
- Sensor Exchange Program (SXP): Regular pre-calibrated sensor replacements
