CODA-500®

Newly developed dispensing and quantification device enable the CODA-500®, Automatic COD Analyser, to maintain measurement accuracy while using only 1/10 the quantity of reagent required. A reagent delivery service also eliminates the need for time-consuming reagent preparation. This reduces the time and trouble involved in reagent replacement and cuts running costs in half.

The use of a color LCD with a touch panel makes operation intuitive, and lower power consumption reduces environmental load. These and other functions attuned to the times will enable the system to meet future water quality management needs.

*COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand): COD is one of the index for water pollution, indicating an approximate quantity of organic matter that becomes a water pollution source. A smaller COD value shows a smaller quantity of pollutant. COD is used for environmental standards for seas and lakes.

CODA-500-A®

A COD measuring method based on “Oxygen consumption by potassium permanganate at 100 °C”. In this method, sample is acidified by sulfuric acid, while potassium permanganate is added as oxidant to the sample before it reaches the catalyser (boiling water bath) for 30 minutes. The quantity of potassium permanganate consumed is determined after reaction as it is proportional to the equivalent quantity of oxygen in mgO/L. This method is called “Acidic method” because the measurement is conducted in acid condition. The CODA-500-A® is designed for automatic COD measurement by acidic method. COD Analysers using acidic method have some limitations function of the content of chloride ion masked in the sample by silver ions prior oxidation, in this case Silver chloride is produced and may affect a measurement stability and accuracy.

CODA-500-B®

In the case of the sample containing high concentration of chloride ion such as seawater, it is difficult to mask chloride ions with silver ions. For this reason, the measurement is conducted with 100°C alkaline potassium permanganate method as specified in the Sewage Test Method. This method is called the “Alkaline method” because measurement is conducted in alkaline condition which is made by adding sodium hydroxide solution into the sample resulting in alkaline conditions. The COD Analyser CODA-500-B® enables automatic COD measurement by alkaline method to overcome the needs for accurate COD online analysis in sample with high chloride content.

Thanks to its patented reagent cleaning function, the COD Analyser CODA-500-C® automatically purges silver chloride dust at the end of each measuring cycle. This automated sequences enables a greater stability in online analysis.

The chemical oxygen demand (COD) is a measure of water and wastewater quality. COD testing is often used to monitor water treatment plant efficiency. The COD analyser CODA-500® automated method is based on the fact that a strong oxidizing agent, under acidic conditions, can fully oxidize almost any organic compound to carbon dioxide. The COD is the amount of oxygen consumed to chemically oxidize organic water contaminants to inorganic end products.

CODA-500® is designed for integration into Water Quality Monitoring Stations (WQMS) and automates COD measurement by wet chemistry with high accuracy and great reliability for the protection of surface water, spring water, rivers and groundwater.

Process water

The COD is measured using a strong oxidant (e.g. potassium dichromate, potassium iodate, potassium permanganate) under acidic conditions. A known excess amount of the oxidant is added to the sample. Once oxidation is complete, the concentration of organics in the sample is calculated by measuring the amount of oxidant remaining in the solution. COD is expressed in mg/L, which indicates the mass of oxygen consumed per liter of water.
